At FOH®, we work hard and play harder!  
In true FOH® fashion, we do things a bit differently. Every month, we get together and celebrate new hires, promotions, birthdays, anniversaries, and Team Member of the Month Winners at our Team Member Celebrations. Each month, volunteers from our team lead an engaging and entertaining event by planning and executing every detail, including décor, activities, food, and flow. This allows our teams to focus on what is important to them, while also helping them develop soft skills like public speaking, teamwork, creativity, and resourcefulness. This celebration is a way to acknowledge our connection and recognize our Team Members.

Who doesn’t love surprises? Our team loves to surprise everyone with fun activities to not only show our appreciation for the team, but to create special, memorable moments.  
A few of our favorite memories include having cookies, cocoa &amp; coquito during the holidays and creating a popcorn bar full of treats and smiles. We also like to get active with our team. Sometimes we shake up the day with a high-intensity circuit challenge or wind it down with a stretching yoga meditation class.

We love a good “dress-up” day!  
At FOH® we encourage our Team Members to let their personality shine through in every way! One way we like to have fun with it is by dressing up to a theme once a month. In the past couple of months, our Team Members wore their favorite movie t-shirts for “At the Movies”, and the colors red, yellow, and green in the spirit of “ONE Love”, a tribute to the life of Bob Marley. We believe our teams’ colorful outfits speak for themselves!

The hospitality industry has changed significantly over the past 60 years, and women are becoming leaders with active opportunities and taking on leading roles within the hospitality market. FOH® has earned our place as a leading women-owned company within all segments of hospitality: Food and Beverage, Travel and Tourism, Lodging, and Recreation. In the overall economy, 46.1% of employees are now women, and within the sector, this figure has grown to 53.7%.
Despite their significant contributions, women in the hospitality industry continue to face challenges such as gender bias, unequal pay, and limited opportunities for advancement. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let's recognize and honor the achievements of women in the hospitality sector and reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive industry for all.
Alongside the remarkable and pioneering females in food service and hospitality, the culture of FOH® is grounded in a vision to support the education and recognition of women in our industry. We aim to be a resource and platform that gives women the confidence to excel in leadership roles and continue to expand on mentorship. At FOH®, we can proudly announce that out of our 57 team leaders (managers and above), 31 are female. As we continue to celebrate our success in empowering women as leaders, we know there are still massive strides to take.

Case Study: FOH Provides Sustainable Serving Solutions to the Climate Pledge Arena

Location:
Climate Pledge Arena – Seattle, WA
Goal: 
Transform the entertainment complex leading with functionality, flexibility, and providing the ultimate experience for sporting, music, and other entertainment events.
Challenge: 
The challenge lies in ensuring there are equal parts design, functionality, and practicality so the project doesn’t pose more issues than it attempts to solve. From a foodservice and hospitality perspective, the challenge was in providing the arena with <a href="https://fohworldwide.com/sustainability.html">sustainable serving solutions</a> that were in line with its sustainability commitment and aesthetic.
Solution: 
At FOH, we are passionate about our partnerships and their needs, and we felt a connection to the project from the start. Our company designs and manufactures a range of sustainable serving solutions, including eco-friendly, reusable, recyclable, and biodegradable products made from natural materials, which we felt would be a perfect fit for the arena.
We provided the venue with a multitude of products, including reusable porcelain plates, stainless steel risers, servers, and other <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/buffet/buffet-elements.html">buffet serving items</a>. In addition, we provided trays, boards, pans, and smallware from our sustainable <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/natural-materials/bamboo.html">Bamboo</a>, <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/natural-materials/asheville.html">Asheville</a>, and <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/natural-materials/root.html">ROOT</a> collections. These items are long-lasting, lightweight, durable, and environmentally conscious. In fact, ROOT items are created from the wood of fallen trees, ensuring no two items in this collection are exactly alike.
Success: 
Added value and elevated presentation. The design of the arena proved to be as innovative as it is functional – and with our reusable and sustainable serving solutions, now, so is their presentation.

Advocating for Mental Health in the F&B Industry

May is Mental Health Awareness month, but at FOH®, we are passionate about promoting mental health awareness every day, especially for those in the Food and Beverage Industry. That's why we were excited to participate in this year's MAPP Impact event, which brought together industry leaders to discuss issues related to mental health and wellness.
<a href="https://mappimpact.org/">MAPP Impact</a> is a 501C3 non-profit that supports women-led food organizations, businesses, and programs. The organization hosts an annual conference with top industry professionals to discuss how to build greater awareness of mental health issues faced by people employed in the Food and Beverage Industry and how to better support those who may not have access to insurance or other forms of assistance.
This year's conference focused on topics such as creating a safe space for conversations about mental health, understanding the unique challenges faced by those in the Food and Beverage Industry, and developing strategies for providing support.
<h2>Kindred Spirits: Sharing a Common Goal to Promote Mental Health Advocacy</h2>
We partnered with MAPP Impact because we share a common goal of promoting mental health awareness and advocating for those who are unable to access resources or insurance. To show our support, we donated sustainable serving items for the event from our <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/disposable/servewise.html">Servewise</a>® collection, including plates and utensils made from eco-friendly materials.
One of the keynote speakers at the event was Chris Shepherd, founder of the <a href="https://southernsmoke.org/">Southern Smoke Foundation</a>. His organization offers tools and resources to help people in the industry get access to no-cost mental health services, such as counseling, financial assistance, and job training. It was inspiring to hear him speak about the importance of mental health care and the need to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people in the Food and Beverage Industry.
Just like Chris and the other panelists, which included Chefs Lorena Garcia, Andrew Zimmern, Tiffany Derry, and more, we here at FOH® believe that everyone deserves access to the resources and support they need to live a healthy life. By participating in events like MAPP Impact, we hope to spark conversations and generate awareness about the mental health challenges faced by workers in the Food and Beverage Industry. We are committed to continuing our partnership with MAPP Impact and other organizations like the Southern Smoke Foundation to reduce these challenges and prioritize workers’ health and wellbeing.
<h2>Fighting for Everyone’s Right to Mental Health Resources</h2>
It's important for us all to remember that mental health issues can affect anyone at any time, and it’s ok to ask for help. However, many people who are struggling never get the care they need, whether because of financial limitations, failing to recognize their symptoms, fear of the stigma associated with counseling, or even a lack of resource awareness. It’s also important for employers in the Food and Beverage Industry to recognize signs of distress among their employees and provide resources for them if needed.
Organizations like MAPP Impact and Southern Smoke Foundation are doing great work to advocate for mental health, but more needs to be done if we want everyone who needs it to have access to resources such as counseling, financial assistance, job training, and more. We must continue to spread awareness about the importance of getting help for those struggling with mental health issues in the Food and Beverage Industry and recognize that these individuals often face unique challenges in getting the care they need and deserve.
By supporting organizations like MAPP Impact and Southern Smoke Foundation, we can make it easier for workers to access the resources they need when facing mental health struggles. Together, we can make a difference and create a more compassionate and supportive industry culture.

In keeping with this tradition, we teamed up with <a href="https://www.educationfund.org/">The Education Fund</a> to proudly sponsor the 2023 <a href="https://www.educationfund.org/what-we-do/programs/teach-a-thon/taste-of-education.html">Taste of Education</a> event. 
 
Taste of Education is a culinary competition involving several middle and high school culinary programs. The event helps support culinary arts within the Miami-Dade County Public School System through teaching and career development opportunities. Students learn all about proper food presentation and preparation techniques, safety best practices, and about the foodservice and hospitality sector in general.  
 
The event also helps raise money for public schools as part of The Education Fund, a nonprofit organization that implements a range of initiatives to support and improve public education in Miami-Dade. The organization has raised more than $68 million since it was established in 1985 and continues to find new and impactful ways to help students succeed.

<h2 aria-level="2">How the Taste of Education Community Outreach Program Works </h2>
A team of junior chefs from each participating school is charged with creating unique dishes across several categories that highlight their culinary skills for more than 400 guests. The teams vie for thousands of dollars in prizes and their dishes are judged by a “culinary committee” composed of celebrity chefs, restaurant and hospitality industry partners, and other community leaders. This year, the cooking contest took place on February 28 at Hialeah Park and featured 23 of Miami-Dade County’s public school culinary programs.  
 
<h2 aria-level="2">How We Partnered With Taste of Education </h2>
The opportunity to partner with Taste of Education came to us in 2019 after one of our long-time partners, Chef Dayanny De La Cruz, suggested the idea. Executive Chef of the Miami Dolphins NFL team at the Hard Rock Stadium and owner of Levy Restaurants, Chef De La Cruz has partnered with the program and participated as a judge in previous years.  
 
Naturally, we were thrilled to have the chance to give back to the community, helping these junior chefs master their culinary skills and prepare for successful careers in the foodservice and hospitality industry. We’ve proudly been involved with the community outreach program ever since. 
 
<h2 aria-level="2">Our Role in the Event and How We Helped Junior Chefs  </h2>
As a sponsor of both The Education Fund and the Taste of Education event, we provided an in-kind donation of the plating vessels used by the students, such as plates, bowls, cups, and ramekins from our <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/buffet/arctic.html">Artic</a>, <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/catalyst.html">Catalyst</a>, <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/harmony.html">Harmony</a>, <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/kiln.html">Kiln</a>, <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/kyoto.html">Kyoto</a>, <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/origami.html">Origami</a>, <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/spiral.html">Spiral</a>, and <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/tides.html">Tides</a> porcelain and buffet collections.  
 
<a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/blog/20-years-of-inspiration-plating-food.html">Plating options</a> can make or break a chef’s presentation, so we wanted to ensure the junior chefs were given a vast range of serving options suitable for front of house industry standards. This ability gives them the opportunity to properly highlight and complement their gourmet dishes in the best and most elevated way possible. Now, they know how plating goes beyond recipe making and basic food serving.  
 
Our very own Executive Vice President, Mayda Perez, also participated as a judge for the cooking contest this year. The students prepared 30 dishes in a variety of categories, including meat, seafood, vegetarian, and dessert. There were also special awards for best pitch, best visual food presentation, healthiest dishes, and a “People’s Choice” award.   
 
The event offered us an amazing opportunity to help students. We were grateful to have played a role in helping the junior chefs and the Miami-Dade Public Schools culinary arts program and look forward to participating in next year’s culinary competition.

Earth Day is on April 22, and as a company committed to green initiatives, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate! This year’s Earth Day theme is “Invest in Our Planet”, but at FOH, we make it our mission to make a positive impact on the environment every day of the year. 
As you may know, FOH has always been dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint. Not only do we offer sustainable solutions, we also engage in eco-friendly practices at our corporate settings and encourage our team members to give back to the community via our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, From Our Hearts.
Here is a look at some of our upcoming and previous Earth Day activities as well as ongoing sustainable workplace solutions.

The foodservice and hospitality industry has made a huge shift toward reducing the impact of its carbon footprint and creating more eco-friendly product options. Instead of producing single-use products or those made from plastic, the industry has moved toward providing solutions that are made from recycled materials with decomposable elements and products made from durable materials that can be reused numerous times.
In response to this global transition, we are actively increasing the number of <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/front-of-the-house-sustainable-solutions.html">sustainable solutions</a> in our portfolio. We have modified some of the materials we use in our products to ensure they are as environmentally friendly as they are stylish and introduced sustainable collections in our Drinkwise, Platewise, and Servewise lines, including straws and plates made from biodegradable and compostable paper and wood, as well as BPA-free drinkware.
 
<h3>Eco-Friendly Product Packaging</h3>
Our products are always in-stock and ready to ship worldwide from distribution centers located throughout the world, which reduces transportation-related emissions and impact on the environment.
Shipments are assembled using PREGIS® special water-blue eco-friendly product packaging. This sustainable bubble wrap is considered 100% recyclable packaging, which is a HUGE deal. It is “curbside recyclable,” which means it can be placed in a recycling bin for pickup by a waste collection service. Regular bubble wrap contains materials that prevent it from being able to undergo simple recycling methods, so our packaging helps to significantly reduce our carbon footprint.
Additionally, a portion of proceeds are donated to Uzima Water Filters, a non-profit organization that provides clean water filters to people in developing countries that do not have access to clean water.
 
<h3>Green Initiatives at the Workplace</h3>
Our commitment to sustainability is at the heartbeat of our corporate culture. We have undergone several in-house initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint. For example, we have successfully replaced all plastic materials across our offices and distribution centers with our very own sustainable collections and filtered water dispensers to discourage consumption of plastic water bottles. Our workspaces are energy-efficient as well, outfitted with LED motion sensor lighting, Nest programmable thermostats, and energy-saving appliances.

<h3>One Tree Planted</h3>
<a href="https://onetreeplanted.org/">One Tree Planted</a> is a nonprofit organization dedicated to global reforestation. Founded in 2014, the organization plants one tree for every one dollar donated to the cause and has more than doubled the number of trees planted each year since its inception. FOH first partnered with One Tree Planted after accepting the <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/blog/fohr-x-one-tree-planted-html.html">#MillionTreeChallenge</a> to restore National Forests across the United States and have been contributing to the effort every year since. Many of our team members participated in the green initiative by planting trees at the Country Club of Miami’s South Park in Hialeah.
<h3>The Oceanic Society</h3>
FOH partnered with the Oceanic Society for <a href="https://www.oceanicsociety.org/our-work/blue-habits/">Blue Habits</a>, an ocean cleanup and conservation initiative. Blue Habits aims to bring awareness to society about the impact of our behavior on the ocean and promote positive actions so we can actively make a difference in protecting our oceans. Our pledge helped to eliminate approximately 20,000 pounds of plastic from the world’s oceans.
 
<h2 style="line-height: 18px;">Upcoming Earth Day Activities</h2>
<h3>Loop Mobile Shoreline Cleanup</h3>
Hosted by <a href="https://www.volunteercleanup.org/loop_mobile_oleta_cleanup_04012023">VolunteerCleanup.org</a>, the beach cleanup is sponsored by Loop Mobile and takes place at Oleta River State Park. Members of our team who volunteered will be picking up trash and marine debris around the shoreline of Biscayne Bay, one of South Florida’s most important ecological systems. VolunteerCleaunp.org will provide all the supplies for the cleanup (gloves, bags, pickers, buckets, sunscreen, insect repellent, and hand sanitizer).
 
<h3>Baynanza Cleanup</h3>
Our Earth Day volunteer work continues at Pelican Harbor Marina to celebrate the 41st anniversary of Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day. <a href="https://www.miamidade.gov/global/service.page?Mduid_service=ser1516206542736138">Baynanza</a> is celebrated throughout March and April and brings the community together to help clean Biscayne Bay’s shorelines at 31 locations across Miami-Dade County. Headquartered in Miami, these types of green initiatives are especially dear to us since this is our home.
 
<h3>Broward County Library’s Earth Day Fun Day</h3>
On Earth Day, we’ll be at Hollywood Beach to celebrate the second annual <a href="https://broward.libnet.info/event/8008189">BCL Earth Day Fun Day</a>. Sponsored by the Broward County Library, the family-friendly event will feature a beach cleanup, StoryWalk, conservation awareness program, and other Earth Day activities.
 
As Earth Day approaches, we are all reminded to be more mindful of the impact our actions have on the environment. FOH continues to be committed to offering both eco-friendly products and sustainable workplace solutions to help reduce our carbon footprint and protect our planet in any way we can. <h2>The Vision Behind Bevel™</h2>
Essentially, Bevel™ is a marriage of our edgy <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/soho.html">Soho</a> and classic <a href="https://frontofthehouse.com/products/porcelain/harmony.html">Harmony</a> collections that aims to create a balance between the dishes being served and the dishes they are presented on. We took the best of both these collections and added semi-tall straight walls around the porcelain plates and bowls for greater functionality.
We envisioned Bevel™ being paired with both Soho and Harmony because of the fluidity of its coupe shape. Our partners who already feature Soho or Harmony can refresh their existing collections by adding a few Bevel™ pieces for a pop of color or can opt to make Bevel™ their staple collection.
The aesthetic itself exudes a mid-century modern vibe. However, it wasn’t intentional. Much like art, our modern plates take on a life of their own and the design is open to interpretation. We like to think of them as universal. Bevel™, especially, draws from both classic and modern styles, which allows it to mix exceptionally well with other collections, from Bistro chic to Michelin Star posh.

When conceptualizing a new collection, we like to take inspiration from what’s around us while incorporating current design trends. Then, we create shapes that will deliver something fresh to the market.
Next is the testing phase. This is when the collection really starts to develop its signature look and texture.
Bevel™, like all our chip-resistant dinnerware, underwent a rigorous testing process prior to launch, including numerous chip and scratch tests. Our pieces must deliver both in design and quality prior to launch, so they are tested repeatedly to ensure a consistent outcome that not only meets but exceeds our expectations.
“The geometry of the collection reads really well with what’s going on in the landscape of design,” explained Zoë Chamorro, Product Design and Development Senior Manager. “We took our time to make sure we got the essence of this collection just right, testing colors and making updates as design trends changed.”
